Thrissur: Three years ago, Sreeraj Gopi, a young scientist, worked out of his car, using it as both his office and laboratory. Today, his business, Molecules Biolabs, is valued at Rs 100 crore.

Sreeraj Gopi (40), who holds a PhD in organic chemistry, nano drug delivery, and nanotechnology, achieved remarkable success by transforming his research and experiments into a thriving commercial venture. As the Managing Director of Molecule Biolabs, based in Bengaluru, Sreeraj has revolutionised the industry with his innovative use of liposome technology.

What is Liposome technology?

Liposome technology involves creating tiny, bubble-like structures made of natural fats, similar to human cells, that can encapsulate nutrients or drugs. These liposomes are used to deliver medications or nutrients directly to specific areas in the body, improving absorption and reducing loss of efficacy.

This innovative technology is widely used in the pharmaceutical and supplement industries for targeted drug delivery and enhanced bioavailability.

Expanding business, infrastructure

Having started the business with his brother Dr Sreerag and friends Unni Keerikattu and Rajeev Menon, Dr Sreeraj's Molecules Biolabs now manufactures food supplements and other products using liposome technology.

The technology is patented, and the company operates out of multiple locations, including offices and testing facilities in Bengaluru, Palakkad, and Thrissur.

Their 35,000 sq ft factory in Palakkad supports the growing workforce, which includes 75 employees, half of whom are women, and 45 are young scientists.

Sreeraj's work has earned him notable recognition. At 32, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and also received fellowships from the Royal Society of Arts in London and the American College of Nutrition. He has five American patents to his name as well.
