Kalamassery: Ministers P.Rajeev and R. Bindu, who reached the Kalamassery Medical college around midnight on Saturday, said that a thorough investigation will be carried out into the CUSAT tragedy. Calling it an unexpected event, they added that the Health Minister had taken necessary steps to ensure treatment for the injured.
CUSAT will bear the medical expenses of the students. There will be a public homage at the CUSAT School of Engineering on Sunday morning at 10 AM.
According to the preliminary assessment of the health department officials, those seriously injured have suffered brain, lung and liver injuries. Geetanjali and Sheeba, who are undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of Aster Medicity, have suffered severe brain, lung and liver injuries. Both were in critical condition when brought to the hospital. Sheeba’s condition has improved, hospital authorities said. Most of the other injured have broken limbs and ribs. However, they are not in serious danger, Collector NSK Umesh said.
Contention remains over the real cause of the stampede as students who were present at the scene said the rush occurred after the rain had receded. There was a huge crowd in front of the gate to attend the concert. There was an attempt to send some students back, reports said. The gate was opened and those standing on the stairs near the gate were pushed to the front. This is when students lost control and began falling. Some students said that the steep stairs caused the fall and that everything happened within 10 minutes.

Ann Rifta's father Roy came to the Kalamassery Medical college around 11 PM on Saturday and broke down saying,”My daughter is gone. Why are you all standing here now”. Opposition leader V.D Satheesan, MP Hibi Eden and DCC President Mohammed Shiyas helped Roy and his son Rithul reach the hospital.
However, they could not console the father and son. Ann’s mother Sindhu is in Italy on a visiting Visa to look for work. She has been informed of the accident but there is doubt regarding whether she will be able to return from there.
