Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University's Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, has denied permission for a stage show featuring Bollywood sensation Sunny Leone at the University College of Engineering in the Karyavattom Campus. The decision was conveyed with the registrar on Wednesday, effectively putting an end to the college union's plans to host the event on July 5.
The college union's decision to organise the program without obtaining prior permission from the university has been met with stern opposition from the administration. This move comes in the wake of a government directive banning DJ parties and musical nights on campus grounds. Sources indicate that this order is a precautionary measure following a tragic stampede incident at a technical festival held at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), which resulted in the loss of four lives and left nearly 50 others injured.
Despite the government's prohibition on such events, the engineering college union proceeded with plans to host Sunny Leone's program, prompting the Vice Chancellor to take a stern stance against such programs. Dr. Kunnummal has emphasised that students will not be allowed to organise such programs in the name of the union in or outside the campus.
Meanwhile, Sunny Leone, known for her versatile contributions to the entertainment industry, was last seen in the Malayalam movie "Mrudhu Bhave Dhruda Kruthye" directed by Shajoon Kariyal and produced by Hydroair Tectonics Pvt. Ltd..
With the university's stance firmly articulated, it remains to be seen how students and organisers will respond to this latest development in the ongoing discourse surrounding campus culture and entertainment.
