Malappuram: The District Medical Officer in Malappuram has asked the public to be more prudent in thewake of the death of a seven-year-old due to Shigella virus in Puthanathani here on Sunday.
The boy died of diarrhoea and his mother is also undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode.

Shigella cases were also reported in the district last year. The district health team has taken necessary steps to contain the virus. District Surveillance Officer Dr K Muhammad Ismail, Technical Assistant P Prakash, visited the spot and carried out inspections.
The water used to make ice, ice cream need to be clean. Inspections will be carried out at places where food and beverages are made.
Shigella is one of the causes of diarrhoea and it mostly affects children. It spreads through contaminated water and stale food. It can spread easily if it comes in contact with the excreta of patients.
