Thiruvananthapuram: Education Minister V Sivankutty said that Malayalam alphabets will be included in the textbooks from the next academic year onwards. He added that the government has decided to revise the curriculum promptly.
He told Mathrubhumi that the curriculum committee would discuss and decide on the inclusion of alphabets for the suitable class at the stage of preparing the textbooks. He called for detailed academic discussions on the matter. Further, a recommendation tabled by the expert committee for revising the Malayalam script would be considered when the alphabets are included in the curriculum.

The minister was responding to Mathrubhumi's 'Mayaruth Malayalam' campaign to include Malayalam alphabets in textbooks. Earlier, Mathrubhumi has set the stage for a continuous debate among linguists, writers and cultural activists against the omission of alphabets from the textbooks in the state.
He said that the alphabet was excluded from the textbooks during the 2013 textbook revision. The government wants children to learn the alphabet.
The government is of the view that special emphasis should be given to Malayalam. As part of this, Malayalam was made compulsory till Class 12. Every effort will be taken to implement this. The minister added that there is need to look into the incident in which primary school teachers were appointed without studying Malayalam.
