Alappuzha: The social justice department of Kerala government has readied a plan based on the 2018 Supreme Court verdict on ensuring safe houses for couples who marry against the wishes of the family, caste or religion. The plan will be submitted before the competent authority in the coming week.

The apex court’s verdict was based on government data on honor killings. Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case turned crucial for this. Many interfaith and inter-caste couples face boycotts, threats, pressures and physical attacks for their choice. Many also find it difficult to get rented properties as a section of society still views interfaith and inter-caste marriages as taboo. The apex court suggested the state authorities to establish ‘safe houses’ for such couples in every district.

The Kerala government initiated procedures over the verdict in 2020. With the submission of the plan report, it will gain new momentum. NGOs too are roped for pursuing the plan.

It is learnt that the government will be providing housing for 25 couples in the first phase. The process to find locations is reportedly progressing.

The couple will be able to live in such houses for one year. Within that period they should be self-reliant for which counseling, legal aid and work skill enhancement will be provided.
