New developments emerge in the Sabarimala gold theft case as the SIT report reveals arrests, scientific analysis of gold plating, and evidence of tampering.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarimala gold smuggling case to examine the temple’s strong room, where valuables are stored.
Furthermore, the court also raised suspicion that the gold plates may have been replaced, noting that the inspection report strengthens this concern. It directed that detailed statements be recorded from the VSSC officials who conducted the examination, and officials’ statements taken to determine clearly whether the plates were replaced.
The court said a fresh examination is required to determine whether the plates are new or old. It granted permission to the SIT to conduct another inspection on January 20, including measuring and examining the door plates.
Earlier, the SIT submitted a comprehensive progress report, outlining steps already taken and proposed future action. According to the report, 11 of the 16 accused have been arrested, and further investigations are ongoing.
In line with high court directions, the SIT collected samples from various gold plates in November 2025 and sent them for scientific analysis to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). The VSSC report, submitted in January 2026, provides critical insights into the alleged tampering.

The analysis focused on the original gold plating from 1998, additional plating carried out in 2019, and whether older plates were replaced with new ones. Tests revealed the absence of nickel and acrylic in the original plates, while the newer copper plates contained acrylic but no mercury, suggesting deliberate substitution.
The court noted that the findings shed light on the systematic manner of the alleged offences and provide crucial evidence linking past and recent transactions. The SIT has been directed to record detailed statements from VSSC experts and correlate scientific results with the physical and documentary evidence. The findings will guide the investigation, help establish responsibility, and explore any larger conspiracy behind the transactions.
The High Court said the case will be taken up again for hearing on February 9.
