Thiruvananthapuram: In light of the increasing violence and the growing influence of drug mafias in society, both the ruling and opposition parties have decided to join forces to create a united resistance, putting aside political differences. In response to the adjournment motion notice filed by senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan agreed to allow a discussion. The Chief Minister also indicated that the discussion would include suggestions for uniting against this social disaster.

While the opposition had raised concerns about the government's lack of a clear action plan and shortcomings in addressing the issue, Opposition Leader VD Satheesan extended the opposition's support for any constructive plan to combat the social menace. Satheesan expressed deep concern about the rising criminal activities among students and highlighted the seriousness of the issue, noting that the cruelty demonstrated by these individuals stems from the system's lenient approach towards them.

He emphasized that during earlier discussions on the matter, the opposition had shown its support. Therefore, he stressed that this issue could not be solved by merely offering support while doing nothing. He also questioned whether the government had a concrete action plan against drugs. In response, the Chief Minister confirmed that such a plan exists and elaborated on its details. After a 30-minute discussion, in response to Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan's question about whether administrative intervention would be effective, the Chief Minister concluded with a firm assurance.

The discussion raised several important issues, including the weakening of family relationships, the lack of communication between parents and children, changes in children’s mental health, digital addiction, the impact of social media, technological knowledge, and the methods that lead children astray.

Emotional remarks were made by the MLA from Thamarassery, M.K. Muneer, regarding the murder of a student. He expressed concern about the changing atmosphere in schools and colleges, where friends could easily become foes. Eleven members from both the ruling and opposition parties participated in the discussion.

Government's Action Plan to Combat Drugs and Violence:

  • A meeting will be held involving social scientists, spiritual leaders, and other community workers to discuss effective ways to conduct awareness campaigns.
  • Narcotics mostly enter the state through ports in other states. Public intervention is needed to prevent this. Information can be reported to the Narcotic Control Room at 9497927797, with the informant's identity remaining confidential.
  • Society must take responsibility to ensure that children do not stray onto harmful paths. School Protection Groups will be formed.
  • Police and residential associations must meet at least once a month.
  • Strengthening units like the Student Police Cadets in schools to use them in combating such issues.
