Kanhangad: As the wedding and festival season arrives in Kerala, the price of mulla (jasmine) flowers has soared. In the local flower market in Kanhangad, jasmine sourced from Tamil Nadu is now priced at ₹3,500 per kilogram, a sharp increase from just ₹150-200 a month ago.
The premium kudamulla variety, renowned for its fragrance, is being sourced from regions like Madurai and Dindigul in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, jasmine flowers from Karnataka, particularly the atti mulla variety from Mangaluru, have also seen significant price hikes. A four-metre atti garland that previously cost ₹200 is now priced above ₹1,000.
Special varieties like Bantwal and Udupi jasmine are also witnessing steep price increases, with Bantwal garlands priced at ₹1,200 and Udupi jasmine at ₹1,600. According to flower traders, the price of Mangaluru jasmine fluctuates daily due to high demand and limited supply.
This surge in prices is expected to continue as the demand for flowers remains high during the ongoing festive and wedding season.
