Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Road Safety Authority has asked district collectors to audit the safety of state and national highways to identify faults in accident-prone areas.

The Authority has identified 323 corridors that are dangerous for motoring. The collectors will identify the problem and recommend solutions.

The corridors include 2km to 10km and stretches around ‘black spots’ notorious for accidents. The spots were identified based on accident data of the past one year.

New towns and junctions would form after roads were laid due to the increase in traffic. This is a change to the initial design of the road. However, there would have been no new signals to warn motorists. Besides, trees will also grow on roadsides. These would affect safety, the Authority believes.

The Authority believes that most of the black spots can be rectified by scientific approach. As a result of this, road accidents are expected to be reduced by at least 10 percent next year. The Road Safety Fund can be utilised for installing new signals and safety fencing.
