Kozhikode: The reconstruction of the Kozhikode railway station will commence in the first week of September and is expected to be completed by December 2026, informed PK Krishnadas, chairman of the Railway Passenger Amenities Committee.

Only 10 per cent of the existing building will be retained. The new construction will take place on a four-acre 20-cent plot, and the upgraded station will offer amenities akin to international airports.

The new station will boast 19 lifts, 24 escalators, a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge, two entrances, and ample parking facilities. On the eastern side, a five-story parking system will be developed, with a capacity to accommodate 424 cars and 1,234 two-wheelers simultaneously.

Additionally, a six-storey parking complex will be constructed on the western side. Another notable feature of the station premises will be the 48-metre wide lane. Unreserved passengers will have access to a spacious waiting area spanning 20,968 square feet, while reserved passengers will have a waiting area of 16,985 square feet.

Krishnadas also highlighted that a petition has been submitted to the Prime Minister, drawing attention to the non-restoration of fare concessions for senior citizens and journalists after the Covid-19 outbreak.
