Senior Congress leaders unite as Rahul Mamkootathil faces calls to resign as MLA amid mounting misconduct allegations.

Thiruvananthapuram: Amid weakening defences against allegations from multiple women, MLA Rahul Mamkootathil is expected to resign his Assembly seat on Sunday. Reports suggest his resignation will take effect later today. A unified stance by senior party leaders, including VD Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, VM Sudheeran, Uma Thomas MLA and Shanimol Usman — has paved the way. A consensus appears to have been reached within the party and KPCC president Sunny Joseph has also urged Rahul to step down.
Ramesh Chennithala had made it clear that Rahul should not hold the MLA post “even for a minute”, warning that delay would harm the party’s prospects. Following firm voices from women leaders such as Shanimol Usman and Bindu Krishna, Congress feels there is no alternative but to secure his resignation. Only Shafi Parambil within the party continues to extend political support to Rahul. The party holds that technicalities—such as absence of formal complaints—should not be used as excuses. Heightened concerns about further allegations and reputational harm to the party are underlining the pressure for resignation.
Rahul has reportedly been staying at his Nellimood home at Adoor for three days amid the intensifying scandal. On Saturday, he invited the media to his residence for an hour-long press briefing — appearing to signal a decision — but party intervention prevented any remarks. While speculation mounted that he might resign, Rahul later stated he was not even contemplating it.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Commission has filed a case against Rahul. Earlier, AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi had indicated there was no need for resignation. However, as allegations intensified beyond his ability to defend, even the Palakkad DCC took a stand against Rahul.
