There has been a protest over the deaths of a young woman, Ashwati (35), and her unborn child, who were admitted to a private medical college hospital for delivery. Relatives and locals demonstrated outside the hospital with the deceased’s body. The protest ended after discussions.

The police have stated that further actions will be taken once the post-mortem report is received and mentioned that a case of murder might be filed. Protesters have also reported that the police confirmed this. The hospital management explained that a medical board would meet to decide on further actions. Ashwati’s relatives have filed a complaint with the Health Minister.

Ashwati, from Ekarool Unnikulam, was admitted for her second delivery on September 7. According to her relatives, she experienced severe labour pains by Wednesday afternoon. The hospital authorities had initially indicated a normal delivery, but when the pain became unbearable, Ashwati requested a Caesarean section, which the doctors did not perform.

On Thursday morning, the hospital reported that the amniotic sac ruptured and the baby died. Relatives consented to the removal of the sac after being informed that Ashwati’s life was at risk. She was moved to a private hospital in Kozhikode on Friday afternoon but passed away at around 3:30 PM.

Hospital Authorities’ Explanation

The hospital authorities explained that Ashwati was admitted for her second delivery, with the first being uncomplicated. This time, she had high blood pressure. They noted that by 3 AM on Thursday, labour had progressed, and the baby’s heartbeat slowed, leading to an emergency Caesarean section. Upon opening the womb, they discovered a rupture in the amniotic sac and attempted all possible measures to control the bleeding. Due to the need for advanced treatment, she was referred to a private hospital in Kozhikode. The authorities deny any medical negligence.
