Kozhikode: A tragic sequence of events has unfolded in Ekarool, Kozhikode, where a mother and her unborn child have died under troubling circumstances. The deceased, Ashwathi (35), and her child reportedly passed away due to alleged medical negligence, according to family members.
On the early hours of Thursday, the newborn baby died, and despite attempts to save her, Ashwathi also succumbed later in the day at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
According to the family, Ashwathi was admitted to a private medical college in Ulliyeri for delivery on the previous Saturday. Due to the absence of labour pains, medication was administered on Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite experiencing some pain by Wednesday afternoon, the delivery did not progress. Ashwathi and her family requested a Caesarean section, but hospital officials assured them that a normal delivery was still possible.
Early on Thursday, the family saw Ashwathi being wheeled into the operation theatre. Shortly thereafter, they were informed that the foetus had died due to the rupture of the amniotic sac, and Ashwathi's life was also at risk if the sac was not removed. With the family’s consent, the medical team proceeded with the procedure.
Ashwathi was later transferred to another hospital in Kozhikode for specialist care, but died on Friday evening. The family has filed a complaint with the Atholi police, accusing the hospital authorities of negligence.
This was Ashwathi’s second delivery. The deceased child’s body was taken to Kozhikode Medical College for a post-mortem examination before being returned to the family for final rites.
Hospital officials explained that Ashwathi was admitted due to high blood pressure, which had since stabilised. Despite efforts for a normal delivery, the baby's heartbeat deteriorated, leading to a Caesarean section. They reported that the baby was already deceased upon opening the abdomen and that the amniotic sac had ruptured. Ashwathi also experienced uncontrollable bleeding, necessitating the removal of the sac. Due to the need for an ECMO system, she was referred to another hospital, they added.
Ashwathi is survived by her son Dhyan and kin.
