Kozhikode, Kerala: A protest against the waste treatment plant in Thamarassery turned violent on Tuesday, leaving several people injured and the factory partially set on fire.

Local residents had staged a march demanding the closure of a fresh-cut waste treatment plant in Ambayathod, citing the unbearable foul smell and environmental concerns. As the protest escalated, some demonstrators threw stones at company vehicles trying to disperse the crowd.

During the clash, Thamarassery CI Sayooj Kumar and others sustained injuries and were admitted to Taluk Hospital here for treatment.

Police used tear gas multiple times in an attempt to disperse the protesters. When the crowd continued to resist, officers resorted to a lathi charge. In retaliation, a group of protesters set fire to the factory.

Kozhikode Rural SP and other officials rushed to the scene to control the situation. Residents have demanded that the factory be completely shut down, stating that the odour and pollution from the facility have become intolerable.
