Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant advancement for Kerala’s fisheries sector, the state government has officially approved the construction of a new fishing harbour in Pozhiyoor, a coastal village in the southern district. On Thursday, Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal announced that Rs 5 crore has been allocated for the initial phase of this major infrastructure project.
The fishing harbour project, which was introduced in this year’s budget, carries a total estimated cost of Rs 343 crore. The first phase of the project will commence with the construction of a 65-metre-long breakwater, a crucial step in the development of the harbour’s infrastructure.
Strategically located near the Vizhinjam International Seaport, the new fishing harbour is set to significantly bolster Kerala’s maritime capabilities and provide vital support to the local fishing community. PTI
