Kochi: Non-bailable charges have been slapped against the accused in connection with the accident that occurred during the dance performance of actress Divya Unni and a team of dancers at Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday. The charges include committing an act that could potentially lead to death. This move by the police follows criticism over initially filing weaker, bailable charges against the organisers.
The non-bailable charges have now been imposed on all three individuals who were arrested. The accused include Mridanga Vision CEO Shameer, Benny from Mulanthuruthy, who was responsible for constructing the temporary stage, and Krishnakumar, who coordinated the event. They are accused of negligence that could lead to death. Their arrests were officially recorded earlier.
The accident took place during a mega Bharatanatyam program held at the Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, aimed at setting a Guinness World Record. MLA Uma Thomas sustained serious injuries after falling from the 18-foot-high inaugural stage. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Sunday, prior to the commencement of the event.
The fall happened as she walked forward to greet someone after sitting on a chair on the stage. She lost her balance when she grabbed a ribbon tied to a temporary railing at the edge. She fell onto a concrete slab, hitting her head. She was immediately rushed to Palarivattom Renai Medicity Hospital in an ambulance.
