Police arrest two in relation to death of student after eating shawarma

Kasaragod: Police booked two persons in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl due to suspected ‘food poisoning’ after eating shawarma from an eatery in Cheruvathur. Chandera police arrested Mangaluru native Anex, who is the managing partner of Ideal Foodpoint in Cheruvathur and a migrant worker Sandesh Roy from Nepal by imposing charges of unintentional killing against them. Another managing partner of the eatery is also under police custody now.

Following the incident, the Food Safety officials inspected Ideal Foodpoint and sealed the eatery. They found that the eatery was running without licence from the food safety department. The food samples taken from the eatery has been sent for more scientific examination. The Minister of Health Veena George directed the food safety commissioner to submit a report and recommended the district medical officer to ensure expert treatment for those who suffer from food poisoning.

The deceased Devananda’s mortal remains will be taken to AV Memorial school at 12.30 pm on Monday after completing procedures of autopsy. The body will be kept for public homage at EMS hall in Peralam also and funeral will be held at Velloor in the afternoon.
