Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader P J Kurian has dismissed Opposition leader’s demand that Speaker Sreeramakrishnan should resign after he was summoned for interrogation by the Customs Department. Kurian stated that customs decision to interrogate someone holding a constitutional position is wrong. The former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman stated this while taking part in a discussion in Mathrubhumi News.

Kurian thinks it is wrong to interrogate someone holding a constitutional position based on a statement provided by an accused. The statement should have been investigated and evidence should have been collected based on the statement. The Speaker’s cooperation in the investigation should have been sought after this. It will be hard for him to remain in the Speaker’s position at this stage, PJ Kurian stated.

It is not right to summon anyone for interrogation based on the statement provided by an accused. It cannot be said that the statement of someone who is kept under custody is completely trust worthy. He also added that he does not agree with the argument that the Speaker has to resign his position because of this.
