Pathanamthitta: A sub-canal of KIP at Konnelayam–Kuttumon, which recently went viral on social media, has emerged as a major safety concern, with residents now stepping in to prevent accidents.

The sub-canal, located at a height of nearly 60 feet, is currently flowing at full capacity after water was released through KIP canals amid worsening summer drought conditions. With relatively shallow waters, the stretch has begun attracting a growing number of visitors seeking to bathe, many of whom are drawn by viral reels and travel vlogs circulating online.

However, the narrow edge running along the canal poses a serious risk. Just four days ago, a man lost his life after slipping from the upper edge and falling nearly 60 feet, sustaining fatal head injuries. The tragedy has intensified concerns among local residents.

According to locals, large groups, including those under the influence of alcohol, frequently visit the site, creating disturbances and increasing the likelihood of mishaps. Residents from both Konnelayam and Kuttumon have now begun actively discouraging visitors from entering the area, often leading to verbal confrontations.

Another key risk arises when swimmers drift downstream with the current and are unable to return through the canal. In such situations, many attempt to walk back along the dangerously narrow canal edge, significantly increasing the chances of fatal falls.

Despite the recent death, authorities have so far only installed warning boards on both sides of the canal, cautioning that bathing is dangerous. Locals have urged the KIP authorities to take immediate action by installing protective fencing along the canal edges to prevent unauthorised access and avoid further tragedies.
