Palakkad: The son of the person who died due to Nipah infection at Changaleeri in Palakkad has also tested positive for the virus. The infection was confirmed following tests conducted at Manjeri Medical College. The 32-year-old son had been in close contact with his father during his hospitalisation.

A total of 106 individuals have been identified as contacts of the man from Kumaramputhur who died recently with symptoms of Nipah. Among them, 31 are classified as high-risk and 75 as low-risk contacts. Five people have been kept under observation at Palakkad Government Medical College.

A team from the National Institute of Virology has collected samples from 160 bats in the area for testing. The samples have been sent to Pune for analysis. On Tuesday, the team visited Kallamala in Agali.

According to the Animal Husbandry Department, no unusual animal deaths were reported in the Nipah-affected area on Tuesday, although the carcass of one bat has been collected for sample testing.

Meanwhile, the police informed that strict surveillance and screening will continue in the region. The district administration stated that it has forwarded a complaint to the police against certain media outlets for spreading fake news on social media regarding KSRTC travel that was not mentioned in the Nipah patient's route map.

On Tuesday, the district mental health team provided telephonic counselling to 63 individuals. The control cell received 28 calls related to the Nipah outbreak.
