Nine-year-old Vinodhini returned to her school in Palakkad after months of treatment following the amputation of her arm. Her classmates and teachers welcomed her warmly.

Palakkad: Nine-year-old Vinodhini returned to school on Monday after a gap of more than five months, marking an emotional moment for classmates and teachers who welcomed her back warmly.
Holding her mother’s hand, Vinodhini climbed the school steps during the morning assembly. As soon as her classmates spotted her, friends Shivani and Rijushya ran towards her along with other children. Happy to be back after months of treatment and rehabilitation, Vinodhini walked slowly with her friends to the classroom, where many stories had been waiting to be shared.
The nine-year-old had been away from school since September 24, 2025. After falling in the backyard of her home, she was admitted to the Palakkad District Hospital with a serious injury to her right arm. Following complications during treatment, her arm had to be amputated below the elbow. Continued medical care and training with a prosthetic arm prevented her from attending school for several months.
When she returned to school, local representatives, teachers and residents gathered to welcome her. MLA K Babu received Vinodhini with a ceremonial shawl. Her grandmother Omana and mother Praseetha accompanied her during the visit.
School authorities said Vinodhini would not face any academic hurdles. Headmistress P V Anitha said the child has a medical certificate allowing her to continue her studies without difficulty. Class teacher Sumesh described her as a quiet student who performs well in her studies.
School manager R Sarojini and PTA president Nandini said Vinodhini has already adapted to writing with her left hand, ensuring she can continue her education smoothly. They added that the school would provide all necessary support to help her continue her studies. Panchayat president K. Ramadas and panchayat member Rajithaprakash were also present during the reception.
High Court orders free treatment and education until age 21
Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court has ordered that Vinodhini be provided free medical treatment and education until the age of 21, after finding that the child was a victim of medical negligence at the government hospital.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice V M Syam Kumar ruled that the loss of her hand should not become a barrier to future employment or opportunities.
The court issued the directive while considering a public interest litigation filed by Thrissur native P D Joseph.
Earlier, the state government had announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund for the child’s treatment and prosthetic arm.
Following the incident, two doctors at the Palakkad District Hospital were suspended. The court noted that although the Administrative Tribunal later ordered the reinstatement of one of the doctors, authorities are expected to file an appeal against the decision.
The High Court also directed the Vigilance Department to conduct a detailed investigation and take appropriate action against officials responsible for the alleged medical negligence.
The bench emphasised that clear medical standards must be followed when treating fractures in children and suggested that new guidelines should be developed if existing protocols are insufficient.
