Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty's decision not to oppose the approval of a private liquor company by the state government has sparked internal controversy within the Janata Dal (Secular), a partner in the ruling LDF government. A faction of the party has called for Krishnankutty's removal, but after heated discussions, the leadership reached a compromise, allowing the minister to retain his position.

However, party members expressed concerns that the issue should have been more thoroughly debated within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) before any final decision was made. The party also emphasized that the issue should be revisited and discussed thoroughly moving forward.

Minister Krishnankutty defends decision

Minister Krishnankutty defended the government's stance, clarifying that the approval was granted as part of an industrial project. He explained that the company would not rely on underground water sources, as initially claimed, and that a rainwater harvesting system would meet the water needs. He further dismissed the concerns as unwarranted. Despite his explanations, a section of party leaders criticised his silence on the issue, deeming it inappropriate.

Leaders from Idukki and Thrissur districts pushed for a leadership change, voicing dissatisfaction with Krishnankutty's stance. However, party president Matthew T Thomas rejected these demands, asserting that a leadership change was unnecessary. He made it clear that he would not replace Krishnankutty as minister, and hinted at the possibility of the position being offered to the RJD.

The party president’s veto power was challenged by some members, who stressed that the issue should be more openly debated. They recalled the party’s past opposition to Coca-Cola plant in Plachimada. Despite the gravity of the issue, the minister’s silence was heavily criticised, with some questioning whether a party needs a leader who fails to speak out on such vital matters.

Meanwhile, the JD(S)’s alignment with the BJP led to discussion about the formation of a new political party. Thomas stated that discussions on the matter are progressing.
