The death of P. Jayachandran, the celebrated playback singer, on Thursday has drawn attention to his deep-rooted connection with the Kerala State School Youth Festival (Kerala School Kalolsavam), a platform that played a major role in his musical journey. His passing came just one day after the conclusion of the 63rd edition of the festival, which saw Thrissur district lifting the coveted Golden Cup for the first time in 26 years.
A Legacy That Began in 1958
Jayachandran hails from Thrissur and his association with the Kerala School Kalolsavam stretches back to 1958, marking the second edition of the festival in Thiruvananthapuram. That year, he competed in the mridangam category, while the legendary K. J. Yesudas participated in the light music competition. Both men emerged victorious, with Jayachandran winning first place in mridangam and Yesudas taking the top spot in singing. This historic event set the stage for a long-lasting bond between the two legends and the festival itself.
The Historic Moment
The uniqueness of this 1958 festival also lay in the fact that, during the award ceremony, when the winners showcased their performances, Jayachandran played the mridangam for Yesudas' performance, marking a memorable moment in the festival's history. The festival, which would come to define Jayachandran's early years in music, holds a special place in his legacy, and his death has added a poignant layer to this connection. Coincidentally, Friday marks the birthday of K. J. Yesudas, adding a further emotional resonance to the loss of Jayachandran.
