Kalpetta: The first township for the resettlement of Chooralmala and Mundakkai landslide victims will be set up in Elstone Estate, Kalpetta. Of the two estates identified for resettlement, the government has decided to acquire only one.
Considering the number of beneficiaries and the availability of basic facilities, the Nedumbala Estate has been temporarily excluded. The Chief Minister has directed that the acquisition process for Elstone Estate be completed within this month. The township will be developed on 58 hectares, with the foundation stone set to be laid in March.
So far, the government has resettled 813 families affected by the landslide, and an initial list of 242 beneficiaries from these families has been prepared. The final list will be published after reviewing those still living in disaster-affected areas and those opting out of the township by accepting the ₹15 lakh compensation announced by the government. A directive has been issued to release this final list soon.
The government aims to begin construction work without delay while seeking an extension from the central government for loan utilisation. Discussions will be held with the Uralungal Labour Society to explore ways to reduce the construction cost from ₹25 lakh per unit.
A 16-member coordination committee, led by the Chief Secretary, has been appointed to oversee supervision, financial planning, and coordination. The committee has also been instructed to hold discussions with donors and beneficiaries.
