The Orthodox Church has criticised the proposal of KC Venugopal for the Chief Minister’s post as "paradoxical”, arguing that sitting MPs should not be considered after being barred from contesting the state elections.

Kottayam (Kerala): The Orthodox Church has intervened in the ongoing discussions within the United Democratic Front (UDF) regarding the Chief Ministerial candidate. Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros, Metropolitan of the Orthodox Diocese, came forward to criticise AICC general secretary KC Venugopal.
While there are no legal hurdles preventing an MP from becoming a Chief Minister, the Metropolitan stated that it is paradoxical for an MP's name to surface for the CM post after a prior decision was made that sitting MPs should not contest the state elections.
"We are witnessing a clamour for the Chief Minister's position. If these reports are true, there is a famous Malayalam proverb: 'The crow suffers from mouth sores just when the hailstone ripens.' We are seeing a similar trend here. Those who have won must understand that they should not trouble the public by creating such controversies simply because they were victorious," Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros added.
Following the UDF’s landslide victory in the elections, debates regarding the Chief Ministerial post have been intensifying. While the names of senior leaders Ramesh Chennithala and V D Satheesan—who led the election front—were already in the fray, a certain faction has recently proposed K C Venugopal, who is a Member of Parliament. The Orthodox Church’s criticism follows this latest political development.
