Kochi: A ten-member special team has been formed to investigate the organ trafficking case that sent shockwaves across the state. The team comprises Ernakulam rural DySP Vaibhav Saxena and Aluva DySP A Prasad, Nedumbaserry SHO Arun K.B, who will be leading the investigation. It has also been decided to form a medical board as it was a matter related to organ trade.
The medical board will examine which organs the victims have lost. Meanwhile, the police have approached the court demanding the custody of Sabith, accused in the case. It is suspected that apart from the kidney of the victims, parts of the liver were also traded.
Sabith has testified that the organ trafficking mafia is centered in Hyderabad and he is the main link in Kerala. With this, the investigation was extended to Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The police are suspicious that some migrant workers who went for organ trade did not return. Efforts to trace the returnees have also begun.
Meanwhile, the accused has admitted to the police that Shamir, a native of Palakkad was taken to Iran for organ trafficking. His location is being traced. Sabith also claimed that of the 20 people taken to Iran, only one is a Malayali.
The investigation revealed that less than Rs 6 lakh were given to the victims. The organ mafia have received up to Rs 60 lakh for the organs.
After selling his own kidney in 2019, Sabith realised the potential in this sector and later became a part of the organ racket. The police say that more information will be available only if Sabith is taken into custody and interrogated in detail.
Sabithh was arrested from Nedumbasserry airport on May 19.
