Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the state assembly on Friday that police are investigating complaints of organ trafficking in the state, leading to several arrests. Responding to a question about the issue, Vijayan revealed that three individuals have been arrested so far in connection with a case in Nedumbassery, Ernakulam district.
Vijayan detailed that one complaint, filed by a resident of Malappuram, accuses two private hospitals in Ernakulam of being linked to an international organ trafficking mafia. Another complaint involves illegal organ transplantation in Thiruvananthapuram.
In the Nedumbassery case, three arrests have been made, and efforts are underway to issue a Blue Corner notice through Interpol for the prime suspect, Madhu Jayakumar, who is currently at large.
A dedicated 13-member police team is investigating the matter. Additionally, the police are probing the illegal organ transplantation from Thiruvananthapuram.
The Kerala State Commission for Women has recently requested a report from the state police following media reports of alleged organ trafficking. According to these reports, women from financially vulnerable backgrounds were being exploited by agents.
