Kerala is set to celebrate Thiruvonam, the most important day of Onam festivities, on Friday, September 5. Malayalis in the state and across the world are preparing for vibrant celebrations, embracing tradition, joy, and togetherness.

Homes will be decorated with intricate floral arrangements, new clothes worn, and traditional gifts exchanged among family and friends, marking the festive spirit of the harvest season.

Local clubs and resident associations are organising games and competitions reflecting Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. Traditional harvest-season games such as Ola Panthu, Kuttiyum Kolum, and Uri Adi will return, alongside feats of strength including pole climbing and log pillow fights.

The aroma of sumptuous Onam meals served on emerald-green banana leaves will fill homes, spreading festive cheer and reinforcing cultural pride across communities.

As celebrations peak, political leaders have extended greetings to the people of Kerala, emphasising Onam’s enduring message of equality, harmony, and unity.

Governor Arlekar conveys festive wishes

Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar wished Malayalis across the world on the eve of Onam. He said, "I convey my heartiest Onam greetings to the people of the state and to Malayalis across the world."

He added that Onam, which brightens every home with joy, celebrates the cherished legacy of equality, oneness, and prosperity, inspiring society to strive for the same.

"Let us together spread the melody, charm, and radiance of Onam across the world as Kerala's message of love, harmony, and brotherhood," the Governor said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasises unity and vigilance

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan underlined Onam as a festival where Malayalis from all over the world come together without prejudice.

"Each of us experiences the joy of sharing love for one another, embracing the vastness of humanity and spreading brotherhood," he said.

He stressed that the goal should be a Kerala filled with prosperity, equality, and happiness rather than merely celebrating the festival.

"May this year's Onam give us energy and inspiration in our journey towards that goal. While realising the dream of a developed Kerala, we should also be able to share its benefits equally without leaving a single person behind," Vijayan added.

The Chief Minister also urged caution against those spreading communalism, division, and hatred during the festival. "We must be able to convince them about the Kerala model of unity and peace. Let us come together during this celebration by upholding the values of love and coexistence," he said.

Opposition leader Satheesan stresses inclusivity

Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan said Onam is a proud celebration for all Malayalis, transcending caste and religious lines.

"We celebrate Onam with the belief that there was a time when everyone was equal and enjoyed with family and friends, setting aside our sorrows and crises," he said.

He added, "This year's celebration also gives us happiness and strength for the journey ahead. Warm Onam greetings to everyone."
