Palakkad: As the new generation hits the roads on flashy new-model bikes, the kings of the 70s are making a stylish comeback — this time with no intention of giving way. Scooter legends like the Chetak, Lambretta, Lambi, Jawa and Vespa are being lovingly restored and brought back to life by A Sulaiman, a veteran two-wheeler mechanic from Thathamangalam.

At 71, Sulaiman still runs his workshop — ‘Bismillah’, founded in 1971 — exclusively for vintage scooters. For over 54 years, he has remained loyal to these classic machines, restoring them with skill and passion.

Sulaiman started working on scooters at the age of 16, with the Lambretta being his first — and still his favourite. That very same model remains safely preserved at his home to this day.

Customers from districts like Malappuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode travel to Palakkad, knowing Sulaiman can revive their old machines. Restoring vintage scooters from the 1970s and ’80s involves a complete overhaul — turning them into retro-styled head-turners. The visual appeal is so strong, they often outshine brand-new models on the street.

Spare parts are increasingly hard to find, but Sulaiman sources them with determination. Palakkad-based dealers help import parts from cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Even if the costs rise, he ensures every scooter gets the attention it deserves. If owners allow enough time, he’ll return the vehicle fully restored, including valid RC, insurance and pollution certificate.

“These scooters are smooth and solid on the road. This is my livelihood,” Sulaiman says proudly.

And when youngsters ask him about his own cherished Lambretta?

“It’s my lifelong companion — a 1966 model. I’ll polish him up, but I won’t sell him to anyone,” he replies with a smile.
