Kochi: Complaints arose that the new concrete posts which replaced the electric posts of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) are not strong enough and are of low quality. The labourers who tried to erect the post complained that the posts are so fragile that they cannot even put them in the holes on the ground.

Two new posts were broken at Naliyani in Alakkode section in Thodupuzha the other day while they were being erected. Following this, the labourers examined the posts and found that the posts were made more quantity of metal powder and less amount of concrete. When the labourers tried to rub on the post with stick, it started breaking into minute pieces.

The workers added that they cannot even unload the posts from vehicles due to its fragility. The posts also seem to bend while erecting. Cracks form on the posts when power lines are connected. Same types of posts are brought to all places in Kerala for replacing old ones. The new posts are unable to survive gusty wind and heavy rain. If these posts are used to connect power lines, it will result in accidents, said the labourers.

The KSEB has given proper guidelines for constructing the posts. The private company that took up the contract did not comply with it. Metal rods are used in a recommended quantity and it is concreted to make the posts. After this, the posts are covered with jute sacks and made wet for seven days. Then the posts are put in water for 14 days. But it was already found out that the company does not follow these guidelines.

KSEB chief safety commissioner and vigilance DYSP inspected the manufacturing units of the company in Dindigul and Pollachi and found the unscientific making of posts. Though they recommended that the company should be blacklisted, the board did not take any action. The board is still using the low quality posts which poses threat to the public.
