Thrissur: The state of Kerala is experiencing power crisis; lack of rain in the ‘Karkidakam’ month has further worsened the situation. Usually, the maximum amount of electricity gets used up in the month of March every year. However, in stark contrast, the daily average consumption of electricity in the month of August so far stands at a staggering 82.42 million units. It should be noted that in March 2022, the daily average consumption stood at 87.4 million units.
August 11 recorded the highest usage with an average consumption rate at 85.9 million units. Meanwhile, the average consumption in the month of August of the previous year was 71.25 million units, a relatively lower rate of consumption.
The electricity board is still shocked over the lack of rainfall in the month of August. In the last five years, Kerala had received maximum rainfall in August, the maximum storage of water was done during this time as well. However, things do not look great this year, as the weather agencies have not predicted further rainfall this month.
The temperature in Kerala this week hovered around 31-32 degree celsius. It should be noted that, last year, during this time, there was enough water to produce electricity up to 3,445 million units in the reservoirs of the state. However, only 1,543 million units of electricity can be produced with the current water storage.
There is only 30 percent of water in the reservoirs across Kerala. The domestic electricity consumption has increased considerably. The increase in use of air conditioners and other equipment are being cited as the primary reason behind this. The state is apparently heading towards a major power crisis as not much rain is expected during the ‘Thulavarsham’.
