Traffic cameras on the newly constructed Thalappadi–Chengala stretch of NH 66 in Kasaragod recorded 4,500 speeding violations in four days. Challans will be issued online.

Kasaragod: In a concerning development, widespread speeding is reported on the newly constructed Thalappadi–Chengala stretch of National Highway 66. During a four-day inspection in the first week of October, cameras recorded 4,500 vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
Officials from the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), who undertook the construction of the 39-kilometre stretch of National Highway 66, said footage showed a vehicle travelling at 160 km/h. The cameras have been monitoring the Thalappadi–Chengala section since August 25, following the completion of construction work. The two-wheelers are warned that any traffic violations will result in a challan for the applicable fine.
“Driving safely with the awareness that ‘someone is watching from above’ can help avoid penalties,” officials said.
All reports are being forwarded to NHAI, while the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is responsible for enforcing fines. Once they begin processing the footage, challans will be issued online.
The surveillance system operates via the Automatic Traffic Management System (ATMS), with a camera control room in Manjeshwar overseeing the Thalappadi–Chengala stretch.
Cameras record vehicle speed, seat belt compliance, unauthorised overtaking, and dangerous driving. The 360-degree cameras installed on the highway ensure multiple angles are captured, with 54 cameras monitoring the first stretch alone. Each camera can capture footage up to 500 metres.
Only four-wheelers and larger vehicles are permitted on the national highway. Two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and local buses must use the service road. Currently, many two-wheelers continue to travel on the highway between Chengala and Thalappadi, while long-distance buses and KSRTC services use the highway.
Speed-limit signs have been installed throughout the stretch, and some locations feature digital boards that scan vehicles from a distance and display their speed.
