Kerala has decided to new security label for Indian-made foreign liquor meant to be sold in the state. It will have 30 security features. Track and trace facility is the primary feature of this taggant-based holographic tax label with a QR code imprinted on it. Implementing a track and trace system in the liquor supply chain will ensure product safety and efficient inventory management. By scanning the QR code, any customer will be able to know the details of the liquor. 

The hologram is developed by C-DIT. As of now, the system is on trial run. The new holograms will appear on the liquor bottles soon. Such a comprehensive system will be the first of its kind to be introduced within the country. This modified second version of the hologram with 30 security features includes the 15 security features that have been already provided by C-DIT since 2002.

Intentions behind introducing security label:

  • To get excise duty on each manufactured liquor bottle at the fingertips
  • To check and arrest the trend of evading duty on liquor
  • The complete and exact route from the bottling plant to the warehouses can be tracked and traced.
  • Manufacturers, import service providers, distributors, wholesalers, small distributors, enforcement officials, and consumers will be incorporated in the network of the tax assessment system.
  • To detect theft, damage, or other issues and track the location and condition of products at any time.
  • Transparency in sales is increased by creating a system in which each customer can verify the authenticity of the product. This system also intends to put an end to tax evasion completely.

  • The status of total liquor sales in the State will be known to the authorities in real-time.
  • Total daily sales, volume of sales in each shop, and volume of sales of each brand can be known in a single click.
  • Manufacturers, import service providers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, enforcement officials, and consumers will be able to check the quality of the liquor.
  • Frauds such as fake labels can be completely eliminated by implementing security measures similar to those used in currency.
  • This system will solve the situation where excise forces have to check the stock register manually.
