The Kerala High Court on Thursday stayed further proceedings based on the First Information Report (FIR) registered against NSS vice president Sangeeth Kumar for taking out Nama Japa Yatra in protest against Speaker AN Shamseer’s myth vs science remark. The court ordered an interim stay of the FIR for four weeks.
The court on Monday sought the state government’s response to the writ petition filed by Kumar for quashing the case against him. Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan’s ruling is based on that too.

Last week, Cantonment Police booked Kumar and 1,000 ‘identifiable persons’ others who participated in the protest march. They have been slapped with IPC sections 143, 147, 149, and 283 along with Kerala Police Act sections 39, 121, and 77B. As per the FIR, the ‘Nama Japa Yatra’ was conducted in violation of the law prohibiting processions or protests in public places. The police alleged that the NSS members gathered illegally near the Palayam Ganapathy Temple and operated mic sets on vehicles without seeking prior permission. The FIR also states that traffic along the road was disrupted.
