Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary MV Govindan on Wednesday termed the LDF’s electoral setback as “unexpected”, stating that organisational and political issues, along with campaigns against the party, may have contributed to the defeat.

Addressing a press conference, Govindan said the party would carry out a detailed review by taking workers, alliance partners, and the public into confidence. He noted that the Left has a history of correcting its mistakes and returning stronger after setbacks.

However, he cut the press meet short, avoided questions from the media, and left after reading out a prepared statement, saying further details would be shared later.

In his statement, Govindan said the LDF secured 37.6% of the vote, which he described as relatively low. He pointed out that in previous elections, the front had received 35.1% in 2019 and 33.35% in 2024, adding that the Left had bounced back from similar situations in the past through corrective measures.

He emphasised that the party’s review process would be “honest” and inclusive, with plans to convene meetings of all party units in May and June to gather feedback from cadres. Party members will be encouraged to express their views “freely and fearlessly” at all levels, from branch committees to area and district committees.

Govindan said only a preliminary assessment was conducted at the state secretariat meeting, and a final analysis would be prepared after consulting grassroots units. He stressed that inputs from lower-level committees would be incorporated before arriving at a comprehensive evaluation.

Highlighting Kerala’s political trend of power alternation every five years, he said the Left had broken that pattern by retaining power for a second consecutive term and expressed confidence that the LDF would return to power again after making necessary corrections.`
