Palakkad: Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise in the state. The statistics show that though the health department intensified preventive measures, it has not been able to eradicate mosquito-borne diseases. 2,657 people were admitted to various hospitals and 18 died due to mosquito-borne diseases so far this year. 

Most of the patients seeking treatment are affected by dengue fever (2,343). 177 Malaria cases and 46 chikungunya cases were also reported. This is as per the statistics from January to August 16. 

In 2021, 2,831 people sought treatment for mosquito-borne diseases out of which 22 people died. The number of patients infected by various diseases is as follows: Malaria- 164, Dengue fever- 2,389, Chikungunya- 278. 

Among the fatalities, 21 people died of dengue fever and one person succumbed to Malaria.

The health department is planning to start preventive measures at the block panchayat level this time in view of World Mosquito Day. The highly mosquito-prone areas in each district have been listed and necessary actions will be taken.
