Kattappana: In a seemingly controversial statement, CPM veteran MM Mani questioned the mental health of vendor Mulangassery Sabu, whose suicide outside a CPM-controlled bank in Kattappana has ignited widespread criticism.  Speaking at a policy clarification meeting in Kattappana organised by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), Mani addressed the controversial death of 50-year-old vendor Mulangassery Sabu. Mani refuted claims that the CPM or its affiliates were responsible for the tragic incident, which occurred at the CPM-controlled Kattappana Rural Development Co-operative.

Mani condemned accusations from the UDF, Congress, and BJP, who claimed the party played a role in Sabu’s death. He explained that the party took over the institution with the goal of saving it from potential closure when Congress-controlled institutions faced financial difficulties. He emphasised that the bank’s management committee, led by V.R. Saji, worked to protect the interests of the institution and its workers.

While expressing sorrow over Sabu's death, Mani stated, “There was no provocation from the bank management or Saji that could have led him to take such a drastic step.” He called for a thorough investigation and denied any links between the bank’s actions and the vendor’s suicide. “We deeply mourn his death. We have thoroughly examined all aspects of the matter,” he added.

Mani also raised concerns about the potential exploitation of the incident by rival political parties. “We are unaware of whether Sabu had any mental health issues or had consulted a doctor. It seems there was no reason for him to take his life because of unavailability of money from the bank,” he stated, urging a detailed investigation.

He further stated, “No one should attempt to place the blame on us for what happened. The BJP and Congress should not exploit the situation to their advantage. We must be ready to assist his family in any way possible.”

What happened?
Sabu was found dead on December 20 at the Kattappana Rural Development Co-operative Society, with his death suspected to be a suicide. He had deposited nearly Rs 15 lakh in the society but was denied a Rs 2 lakh withdrawal for his wife’s medical treatment. His relatives claimed he was rudely treated by bank officials when he requested the funds, with some alleging physical mistreatment.

A suicide note found near his body accused the bank secretary and staff of causing his death, citing their mistreatment and denial of funds. This sparked protests in Kattappana, with political parties and traders demanding justice and the arrest of the involved officials. Audio recordings surfaced of Sabu accusing former bank secretary Saji and staff of mistreatment. The CPM has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation and reiterated its support for Sabu’s grieving family.
