Thiruvananthapuram: Milk prices are likely to go up by more than Rs 6 per litre in the state. A committee, appointed by Milma, submitted its interim report recommending a price hike of Rs 7-8 per litre on Sunday.

The Milma union representatives will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the price hike and will inform the government of their decision.

As per the committee’s report, a hike of Rs 7-8 per litre is demanded by the dairy farmers. Only then can the farmers receive a fair amount excluding commission.

Recommendations by the committee

  • Currently, a farmer receives Rs 38-40 per litre. The production cost is up to Rs 46. Hence, prices should be hiked in such a way that the farmers will receive at least Rs 6 as profit.

  • Cattle health insurance should be implemented as the current insurance scheme is not enough.

  • Veterinary services should be expanded to the hinterlands.

  • Silage production should be expanded.

  • Subsidy should be implemented to reduce the price of cattle fodder.
