Kochi: The Eloor Municipal Corporation has taken action by lodging a complaint with the police concerning the significant fish mortality observed in the Periyar river. The complaint, filed by the municipal secretary, urges authorities to identify companies responsible for dumping chemical waste into the river and take appropriate action against them.
According to the complaint, a widespread occurrence of fish deaths was observed in the Edayar region during Monday night and Tuesday morning. It has been attributed to the substantial release of chemical waste into the river by factories, prompted by the forecast of rain. This incident has resulted in significant losses for local fishermen.

Edayar and its vicinity host numerous factories, which typically anticipate the opening of the shutters of the Pathalam bund during rainfall before discharging waste into the river. Following the incident, a decision was made during a meeting chaired by Minister P. Rajeev to establish a special protocol for managing the bund's shutters.
Efforts are underway to investigate the matter thoroughly, with the sub-collector set to submit a report to the collector tomorrow. Additionally, scientific examination reports from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and sample collections are pending.
