New Delhi: The Central Government is awaiting a response from the family of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding the proposed memorial in his honour. According to sources on Tuesday, a plot adjacent to the one designated for Pranab Mukherjee at Smriti Sthal has been offered, with ₹25 lakh allocated for the project.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had previously informed Singh’s family about the decision, requesting them to establish a trust—an essential requirement for the allotment of public land. In January, government officials visited Rashtriya Smriti following the announcement of the memorial plan. Singh’s family members have been invited to inspect the proposed site, but they have yet to do so.
Situated along the Yamuna riverbank, Rashtriya Smriti serves as a common memorial ground for Presidents, Vice Presidents and Prime Ministers. It currently houses memorials for seven leaders, including former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee, P V
Narasimha Rao, Chandra Shekhar and I K Gujral. With two remaining plots, the government has now earmarked them for Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee.
Manmohan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics, was instrumental in shaping the country’s economic liberalisation as Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government and also served as RBI Governor. The former two-time Prime Minister was widely respected for his economic vision and governance.
