According to the LDF, the distribution began a few days ago, targeting select households in the area. Several people, including homemakers, had reportedly visited the supermarket to collect the free kits. The front alleged that the distribution was aimed at securing votes for the BJP candidate.

CPI leader VS Sunil Kumar claimed that the BJP was widely distributing kits, clothes and other items in the constituency as part of its campaign.

“Under BJP leadership, kits are being prepared in association with business establishments. Even gold traders are cooperating. There is also coordination with some bar owners, where arrangements have been made to serve liquor. A complaint has been filed regarding this. During the 2024 elections, money was distributed when Suresh Gopi contested. Now, not just money, but kits and clothes are being distributed widely,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, the supermarket owner said that a person named Radhakrishnan had placed the order for preparing the kits. Around 75 kits had been ordered, of which 10 were already collected earlier.

The owner maintained that he was unaware of the political affiliation of the person who placed the order. The bill for the kits had also been paid by the same individual, and those who came to the store collected the kits as instructed, he said.

Police and election officials reached the spot following the complaint, after which the supermarket was shut down as part of the intervention.

Kerala will face polls on April 9 and results will be announced on May 4 along with that of polls in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry.
