Ollur: Dr. Kunjamma Mathews, who is 62 years old, will try to enter the Worldwide Book of Records by swimming seven kilometres in the Vembanad backwaters on Saturday. She will embark on the adventure this morning from Alappuzha to Vaikom beach in Kottayam.
The event is organised by Goldfin aquatic club swimming training centre. If she successfully completes the task, Kunjamma Mathews will become the oldest woman to swim across the Vembanad backwaters.
She has been an ace swimmer since her childhood. With very less time, Kunjamma garnered attention through her swimming skills. Before taking up the task, she had undergone rigorous training at a centre in Muvattupuzha for three months. She is also a member of the Endurance Athletes of Thrissur.
According to Kunjamma, “Retirement life is not just to relax. During this period, through exercise and training, we can keep up our spirits and energy levels at the optimum level.”
People from different walks of life, including from political and cultural spheres, will be among the audience to witness the lady embark on the challenging journey in the waters.
P V Antony, Kunjamma’s husband, is a businessman. The lady who is a retired LIC employee holds multiple degrees and has a doctorate in psychology. She has a daughter who works as a dentist in Dubai.
