Kannur: The Kerala State Electricity Board has started enforcing a Time of Day (TOD) tariff system, which charges higher electricity rates during peak time at night and lower rates during the day. This new pricing structure, effective from January 1, applies to consumers who use over 250 units of electricity per month, including domestic users. Over 7 lakh consumers in Kerala fall under this category.

To reduce the night time electricity load, KSEB encourages consumers to shift non-essential appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to daytime usage. Charging electric vehicles (EVs) during the day or after 10:00 pm is also recommended. Kerala’s abundant solar power during the day is being leveraged to optimise energy consumption.

TOD system rollout and peak time adjustments

Currently, about 40,000 meters still need to be upgraded to accommodate TOD rates, with full implementation expected by March 31, 2025. The tariff will be fully implemented starting April 1. The peak hours for electricity consumption have also changed. Previously, a 10 percent discount applied to usage between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am, but this concession is no longer available as night time consumption has increased. Now, users must pay the normal rate during the 10:00 pm to 6:00 am period.

Updated TOD pricing breakdown

  • 6:00 am to 6:00 pm: 10 percent rate reduction (90 percent of the normal rate)
  • 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm: 25 percent rate increase (125 percent of the normal rate)
  • 10:00 pm to 6:00 am: Normal rate (100 percent of the normal rate)
