Kozhikode: Intense protests erupted at the Palayam market on Tuesday morning as hundreds of traders and labourers opposed the relocation of the market to a new site inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The protesters argued that the new complex features smaller shop spaces and is situated far from key bus transport routes. However, traders’ organisations affiliated with the CPM supported the relocation, calling the new facility at Kalluthankadavu modern, spacious and well-equipped.

CPM-backed traders held a rally to the new site, claiming the move would help ease traffic congestion in the crowded Palayam market area at the heart of Kozhikode city. They said the new market offers over 300 shops, twice the number at the old site.

Meanwhile, protesters carrying black flags shouted slogans against the relocation, alleging that small traders were allotted shops built over a covered drainage canal while prime spaces were given to larger businesses.

Loading and unloading workers also voiced concerns, saying they would lose their livelihoods once the market shifts. Union representatives claimed that traders and labourers were not consulted before the decision to relocate was made.
