Kozhikode, Kerala: A major development has emerged in the case where a doctor at Thamarassery Taluk Hospital in Kerala was attacked with a machete by a grieving parent. Contrary to earlier claims, the post-mortem report of the Class 4 girl who died after falling ill with a fever confirms that her death was not caused by amoebic meningoencephalitis.

The attack on Dr Vipin, which left him critically injured, was carried out by Sanoop, the child’s father. According to doctors, the post-mortem confirms that the cause of death was unrelated to amoebic meningoencephalitis. Sanoop had alleged that medical negligence had led to his daughter’s death, prompting the assault.

Background of the incident

Dr Vipin suffered a deep head injury and was shifted to the Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode for emergency treatment after Sanoop attacked him inside hospital premises on October 8. Sanoop had confronted the doctor after failing to find the hospital Superintendent and shouted, “You are the one who killed my daughter!” before slashing him with a machete.

Sanoop’s daughter, Anaya, passed away on August 14 after contracting amoebic meningoencephalitis. When her fever worsened, she was initially taken to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital and later to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, but her condition could not be saved. Subsequent tests confirmed the diagnosis of amoebic meningoencephalitis.
