Kozhikode: The diesel leakage from Elathur depot has raised long-term environmental concerns, with its impact on soil and groundwater being a major worry. Dr. V.S. Chithra, scientist in Ecology and Environmental Science at CWRDM, warned that diesel mixed with soil could seep into the groundwater, affecting wells in the area. However, the proximity of the affected region to the coast provides some relief, as local wells are not primarily used for drinking water.
Despite diesel not mixing with soil in water bodies, its presence on the water surface can affect aquatic life. Diesel forms a visible layer, preventing dissolved oxygen from reaching the water, potentially killing fish and other organisms. Samples have been collected from contaminated streams and nearby wells for lab testing to determine the extent of diesel contamination.

Although HPCL reported a loss of 1,500 litres of diesel, Minister A.K. Saseendran revealed that around 10,000 litres of diesel mixed with water were collected from the site in tankers and drums. Preliminary estimates suggest about 20% of the collected mixture consists of water, indicating the spill may be larger than initially reported.
Government and authorities take action
Joint inspections were carried out by revenue and health department officials at affected water bodies and nearby homes. Complaints from residents were heard, and efforts to identify any health issues among the local population are underway. A dedicated medical team has been appointed to address potential health problems.
Senior officials, including ADM Meharali and Deputy Collector A. Anitha Kumari from the Disaster Management Department, visited the site to assess the situation. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh held discussions with HPCL officials, directing them to ensure no further leaks occur. The company has also been instructed to adhere to all safety and environmental guidelines before resuming operations.
Kozhikode Mayor Dr. M. Beena Philip also visited the site to oversee response measures.
