The Canal City project is envisioned as a hub for boat rides and cargo transportation

Kozhikode is set to witness a major transformation with the launch of the Canal City project, aimed at developing the city’s canal and its surroundings. The first phase, covering the 2.9-kilometre stretch from Arayidathupalam to Eranhipalam, has been approved in principle by the KIIFB Board, which has allocated Rs 73.21 crore for this phase. The longer 11.2-kilometre section from Eranhikkal to Kallai, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,118 crore, is planned to be implemented in multiple phases.
Project Specifications
The renovation, undertaken by Kerala Waterways and Infrastructures Limited (KWIL), will see the canal widened to 14 metres and deepened to 2.2 metres. Bridges across the canal will have a minimum height of 3.6 metres, allowing small boats and barges to navigate safely.

Earlier, silt removal and depth enhancement were carried out in the Sarovaram area, where a small boat was successfully tested. Officials have stated that the renovation will prioritise both navigability and functionality, and tendering and other procedural steps are now underway.
Tourism and Commercial Potential
The Canal City project is envisioned as a hub for boat rides and cargo transportation. Tourism and commercial development are the primary objectives. LEA Associates South Asia Private Limited has prepared the detailed project report (DPR). Although final approval is still pending, the first phase is set to proceed immediately. Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas had earlier announced that the inauguration of the project could be presented as an Onam gift in 2026.

Initially, the DPR was to be prepared in two phases before implementation, then changed to a single-phase approach, and has now reverted to a multi-phase strategy.
Minimising Impact on Residents
The project has been carefully planned to avoid significant loss of private land or impact on structures near the canal, including the mini bypass. Residents’ concerns about the potential loss of their homes have been addressed. The canal will feature 23 bridges of varying sizes along its length.
A Step Towards Global Recognition
Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas said the project marks a long-cherished dream for the people of Kozhikode. Once completed, the canal will facilitate water transport, cargo movement, and tourism on the lines of European waterways, putting Kozhikode on the global map. The Minister also highlighted the ongoing development of the Pavangad-Ulliyeri-Kuttiyadi road as another priority for the region.
