Kottayam: Kerala’s first Gen Z post office has opened at CMS College in Kottayam, marking a move to modernise postal services and attract younger users. Designed as a relaxed and interactive space, the centre aims to make postal facilities more accessible to students who may not typically rely on traditional counters.
Kerala’s first Gen Z-styled post office has opened at CMS College, Kottayam, marking a major shift in how postal services are being redesigned for younger users. Unlike traditional post offices known for long queues and formal interiors, this new facility has been created as a casual, student-friendly environment that encourages both social interaction and digital convenience.

Modern features aimed at younger users
Positioned as an extension counter of the Kottayam Head Post Office, the new space integrates tech-enabled services including QR code-based processes and a ‘My Stamp’ printer that allows users to create personalised stamps instantly. This digital-first approach has been introduced to appeal to students who rely heavily on modern communication tools and online transactions.
A café-like workspace for students
The post office has been designed to resemble a contemporary café rather than a government service centre. Counter tables with charging points allow students to work on laptops or complete assignments while managing postal requirements. The aim is to make the space function both as a service point and a comfortable study zone.
Design inspired by student participation
CMS College students contributed to the design of the facility, incorporating elements that reflect current youth preferences. The interiors include a vertical garden along the walls, picnic table-style seating, and creatively painted recycled tyres used as chairs. The space also features a reading corner and shelves with board games and books to create a relaxed atmosphere.
Supporting sex-positive accessibility to postal services
The initiative is part of a wider effort by the Kerala postal department to make postal services more accessible to younger communities who often rely solely on digital alternatives. By creating a space that doubles as a hangout spot, the department aims to increase engagement among students who may not have previously used postal services regularly.
Inauguration and future expansion
The Gen Z post office was inaugurated by Bishop Malai Sabu Koshi Cherian, signalling a significant step towards modernising postal infrastructure in the state. Officials have indicated that similar youth-oriented facilities could be introduced in other educational institutions depending on feedback and adoption.
The new post office at CMS College is already drawing interest as a creative blend of tradition and modernity, offering essential services within a space designed to appeal to today’s generation.
