Alappuzha, Kerala: If you're certain that you will never return to life and are not interested in ‘clinging on to life’ at a stage where death is inevitable, then you can visit this hospital in Alappuzha district and sign a 'Living Will'.

At the counter at Kollam Parippally Medical College, you can sign a document expressing your desire not to prolong your life with medical intervention if you’re in a condition where recovery is no longer possible.

Based on this written document (Living Will), your family can decide how your death should be managed. Since the launch of the “Living Will Information Counter” on November 1, a total of 87 people have already written their Living Wills.

Anyone over the age of 18, regardless of health status, can prepare a Living Will. The document must be signed by family members and witnesses, and it requires the signature of a gazetted officer or notary. Once written, there is no hindrance to altering the document later.

Dr B Padmakumar, the principal of Parippally Medical College, explained that this initiative was inspired by the controversy surrounding the donation of the body of CPM leader MM Lawrence for medical studies.
